Diary of a Vampire
Part I
by Jason Krueger
Even as I begin writing this, I cannot help but wonder why. Perhaps it is to ease the loneliness of undeath? Perhaps it is to try and understand the circumstances of my present condition. Perhaps it is the small bit of humanity left in me searching for a creative outlet. I cannot be sure. The only thing I can be sure of, is that I have a story worthy of being told. I shall begin with my earliest human memory.
*
It was the first day of my senior year in high school. I was a good student, though this did not do me much justice when it came to a social life. I envisioned myself as an outcast, unnoticed by society. If only I had known!
Slinking through the single hallway of the small school I attended, I made my way to my first period class. English, a subject I excelled in. I took the seat in the very back corner of the empty classroom. Afterall, everyone who had friends waited for the warning bell before coming inside.
My teacher was an older, balding man. His name escapes me, but it is of little importance. I did not attend the class for long. He sat at his desk reading a book, disinterested in the obviously familiar first-day proceedings.
The bell sounded, and my classmates came pouring in, bringing the noise with them. "Silence is golden" was a concept that few seemed to share with me.
As the seats filled, I noticed a particularly attractive black-haired girl take the seat directly next to mine. Her skin was pale, yet beautiful, and she had alluring deep green eyes. She smiled at me as she sat down, displaying a confidence I could only dream of.
"You're not saving this seat for anyone are you?" she asked prettily. Her voice was soft, and I was immediately smitten.
"Er... no, go ahead," I stammered.
"Great! Nice to meet you! I'm Raven." She set down her textbook and crossed her legs, smoothing out the long red skirt she wore.
"I'm Greg. Nice to meet you too."
She smiled in response (oh what a lovely smile) and shifted her focus to the front of the classroom, where our teacher was now introducing himself and explaining the syllabus.
The rest of the day was a blur. My mind was filled with thoughts of Raven. Never before had I been so attracted to a girl, and I knew I had to have her. I slept restlessly that night, and awoke the next morning with a determination unfamiliar to me.
The next day, I arrived at school early, my pulse racing with the prospect of what I planned on doing. I opened the door to my english class, and was surprised to notice Raven already at her desk.
"Hi, Greg!" she said cheerily as I sat down.
"Uh... Hi. Listen, I don't normally do this-" No time like the present.
"Here," she interrupted, handed me a small folded piece of paper. "My phone number. Call me tonight. I'd love to." She rewarded me with one of her gorgeous smiles, and returned her gaze to the front of the classroom.
I was speechless, but elated. The rest of the day seemed to last forever, though I do not remember it now. I do, however, remember that night. How could I forget?
I waited impatiently until seven o'clock to call her. Fortunately, my parents were at my younger brother's soccer game. Any of them -- my brother especially -- would have loved to eavesdrop on such a juicy conversation.
The phone rang only once before she answered.
"Raven?"
"Finally, Greg. I was thinking you might have chickened out!" she teased.
"Well, I might have, if it had been anyone else but you."
"So I'm an easy target, eh?"
"Er, no, that's not what I meant," I stammered.
"Don't worry. I just think you're cute when you're all flustered. You're great fun to tease!"
"So maybe I'm the one who's an easy target?"
"Maybe so, maybe so," she laughed. "So are you going to ask me? I mean, that is what you called for, right?"
"I don't know, now. I'm not used to this kind of pressure." I was nervous, but gaining confidence as the conversation continued. Raven was very easy to get along with.
"Well, I'll take the pressure off you, Greg. Why don't you meet me at the park down the street from your house? We'll take it from there."
"Sure, that'd be fine. But hey, how'd you know-"
"I'll see you soon, then. Bye!" She interrupted, hanging up the phone without waiting for a response. Strange girl, I thought, but I found myself even more intrigued.
I hurried down the unlit street towards the park. I lived in a fairly rural neighborhood; street lamps had not yet been installed. It seemed unnecessary, as the people that resided in the six houses on our block were not prone to taking evening walks. Besides, the porch lights of the houses themselves were enough to see by.
The park itself was not large. It consisted simply of four cement picnic tables, a neglected basketball court with no hoops, and a wood sandbox overgrown with weeds.
Raven was already there, of course, sitting on one of the picnic tables, her back towards me. She was dressed entirely in black, blending in with the darkness.
"Hi Raven!" I called, approaching her.
"Hi Greg," she answered, not turning around. "You know, it's funny. All of our conversations have consisted mainly of 'hi.' Odd, don't you think?"
"Not necessarily. Maybe we're just not good conversationalists."
"Speak for yourself. I'm a pro!" She hopped off her perch and walked up to me, surprising me with a hug. Her scent was musky and mysterious.
"So how did you know I lived near here anyway? You didn't answer earlier."
"Oh, Greg," she sighed. "I know you better than you think. What, do you think I'd agree to go on a date with you after only knowing you for a day?"
"Huh? I've never seen you before yesterday. Trust me, I would have remembered you."
"I never said you've seen me. I just said I know you. Big difference if you ask me."
"Er, I suppose so, but-"
"Don't worry for it now, alright? Besides, it's my turn to ask the questions."
She walked towards the basketball court, absently humming the tune to "Getting to Know You." I hastened to join her, mystified.
"Greg, what do you imagine it'd be like if you could live forever?" she asked, as we walked along the outermost line of the court.
"Immortality? I don't know, I haven't given it much thought."
"Well, give it some thought now. What would you think if you knew you would never die?"
Not your average first date question, I'll admit. I was out to impress, however.
"It would probably be pretty neat, I guess. You could do anything and everything you ever wanted to do. You'd never run out of time."
"Well, then, what would you do after you had done everything? I mean, we're talking eternity here."
"Er, I really don't know, I guess. What would you do?"
"Oh, I don't know... enthrall boys like you and show them what it's like?"
"Very funny," I said humorlessly.
"Well, you said it yourself, you're an easy target."
Before I could respond, she was in my arms again, her face pressed against my neck. I could feel the soft touch of her lips. Nervousness got the better of me.
"Raven, we shouldn't-" I was cut off by a piercing pain in my neck. She was biting me!
"Hey!" Then suddenly I went limp. My legs gave out, and I slumped forward. She held me up with inhuman strength. My mind could not yet comprehend what was happening. The impossibility of the situation prevented that.
I felt weaker and weaker as she drained the blood from me. My body went cold, though I felt oddly blissful. Mentally, I was floating on a cloud. Suddenly, I fell to the ground, as Raven let go of me.
"Greg!" she snapped. I could vaguely see her kneeling above me. Her lips were stained crimson. I felt as if I were dying. In reality, I was.
As I faded away, Raven pressed her wrist against my mouth. "Drink!" she commanded. I felt drops of her blood fall upon my tongue.
"Drink, or you'll die!" She pressed harder, and I obeyed.
Slowly, I felt revitalized. My strength returned, and I sat up, now enjoying the taste of her.
"Stop, you idiot, it's done." She sounded so cold, now. So unfeeling. She wrenched her wrist away, and closed her other hand around it briefly. As she took her hand away, I noticed no wound, no puncture.
"Let's see how 'neat' you find immortality now. You'll notice that you can't voluntarily kill yourself. That's part of the vampire's curse. Yes, you are a vampire now."
I stared at her, unblinking.
"Revenge is sweet," she continued. "I'll be watching. Happy suffering."
Raven disappeared, as if by magic. Still unable to cope, my mind shut off in self defense. I lost consciousness there on the basketball court.
